Ballarat Road's best restaurants and takeaway spots across every cuisine
Deer Park is not a suburb people think of for food. That is a mistake. Ballarat Road from the Deer Park bypass to Brimbank Central is one of the most diverse food strips in Melbourne's west. Malaysian, Vietnamese, Indian, Italian, pub grub, and takeaway joints sit side by side for about two kilometres.
The suburb does not have a hipster brunch scene. What it has is better value and more variety than most inner-city food streets. You can eat well here for $15 or less, and most places have parking right out the front.

Cafe Oliveto is the closest thing Deer Park and Cairnlea have to a proper brunch cafe. Italian-run, with a menu that covers brekkie, lunch, dinner and everything in between. Located in the Havenlea Business Centre on Furlong Road.
The Tuesday night steak deal at $19.90 is hard to beat. Solid wood-fired pizza, pasta, and weekend brunch with eggs and smashed avo. 457 Google reviews at 4.4 stars. A few locals in the Sunshine and Brimbank Facebook group have flagged the gluten-free pizza as a genuine standout.

Chef Lagenda is the most popular restaurant on Ballarat Road by sheer volume. Over 1,700 Google reviews at 4.0 stars. The laksa is the dish that keeps people coming back. Rich coconut broth, thick noodles, prawn and chicken. A proper bowl, not the watered-down version some places serve.
The roti canai is another reliable order. Flaky, buttery, served with curry sauce for dipping. Nasi lemak rounds out the Malaysian staples. Portions are big and prices stay reasonable.
Address: 2B Burnside St, Deer Park
Price: $6-$14
Western Rolls has a 4.7 Google rating across 241 reviews, one of the highest in the suburb. Vietnamese banh mi and fresh rice paper rolls, each with a unique dipping sauce.
Crunchy bread, generous fillings, and you will struggle to spend more than $10. One Facebook reviewer nailed it: "bread on point, good amount of chilli, super friendly service." Takeaway-focused. Grab a couple and eat them in the car or take them to the park.
Address: 823 Ballarat Rd, Deer Park
Price: $14-$20
Western Pho is the sister restaurant to Western Rolls. Together they run a joint delivery and pickup service via eatviet.com.au. Solid pho if you do not want to drive to St Albans or Footscray for Vietnamese food.

BRNX sits at 4.7 stars across 92 reviews. The name is a nod to Brimbank. Big pizzas, loaded burgers with proper beef patties, and American-style hot dogs with all the toppings.
Good for families with fussy kids. Everything on the menu is familiar, portions are large, and you can feed a family of four for around $50. Solid takeaway and delivery trade, but there is seating if you want to eat in.
Address: 6/7/85 Mt Derrimut Rd, Deer Park
Price: $16-$28
Aangan has over 4,100 Google reviews. The most reviewed restaurant in the entire suburb by a wide margin. North Indian menu. Butter chicken, lamb rogan josh, biryanis, and tandoori dishes cooked in a clay oven.
Slightly off the main Ballarat Road drag on Mt Derrimut Road. Portions are generous and the naan comes fresh from the tandoor. Deer Park has a large Indian community, and Aangan is where many of them eat when they do not feel like cooking. That says everything.
Address: 760 Ballarat Rd, Deer Park
Price: $18-$35

The Deer Park Hotel has been on Ballarat Road for decades. Classic pub bistro. Parmas, steaks, fish and chips, and whatever the specials board says. Nearly 1,500 Google reviews at 4.3 stars.
Beer garden out the back, TAB, and sports on the screens. Not trying to be anything other than a good suburban pub, and it does that well. Counter meal and a cold beer without the drive to Footscray or the city.

Local tip: Deer Park sits at the junction of Ballarat Road and the Western Ring Road. From Sunshine or St Albans, take Ballarat Road west. From Keilor Downs or Taylors Lakes, come via the Western Ring Road and exit at Deer Park. Brimbank Central is the landmark. Most of the food is within five minutes of there.
Deer Park does not get the food recognition it deserves. Ballarat Road packs more cuisines per kilometre than most suburbs twice its size. Browse all cafes and restaurants or explore all businesses in Deer Park.
