Three spots worth knowing about on Perth Avenue and beyond
Perth Avenue is doing a lot of work for Melbourne's west. This short strip in Albion, easy walking distance from Albion Station, has quietly become one of the better cafe stops in Brimbank. Add a family-friendly newcomer on Sydney Street and you have a suburb worth a deliberate visit, not just a drive-through.
Mitko Deli and Cafe has been operating since 1992. It is a European-style deli first and a cafe second. Alongside your coffee you can pick up cold-smoked meats, imported cheeses, fresh pastries, and housemade cakes to take home. The cabinet food changes daily and tends to disappear by late morning. Arriving early is the move. Reviews consistently single out the coffee and the vanilla slice. It is an unpretentious spot that has been serving the neighborhood for over three decades. Open Monday and Tuesday 6:30am–2pm, Wednesday to Friday 6:30am–3pm, Saturday 6:30am–2pm. Closed Sunday.

Sadie Black is the go-to sit-down cafe on Perth Avenue. Owners Chris and Meaghan Blackwell are Albion locals with over 30 years of food industry experience between them. The menu is seasonal and short. Everything on it is made with care. The Reuben sandwich is a cult favourite. It has the right amount of pastrami, proper sauerkraut, and none of the overcrowded excess that ruins most cafe versions. The Sadie Black burger and housemade steak sandwiches are equally worth ordering. Coffee is Allpress, reliably well-pulled. The courtyard out back is a genuine pleasure in good weather. Open 7 days, 7am–2pm. Kitchen closes at 1:30pm.

Elephant Cafe Albion is the newest addition to the suburb's cafe scene. It is part of a well-regarded group with existing venues in Newport and Williamstown. The Albion location sits on Sydney Street, a short walk from Kororoit Creek trails and local parks. The strong family crowd makes sense given the layout. There is an outdoor play area, a cubby house, and a swing. The menu covers all-day brunch and lunch. Coffee is freshly roasted Elephant house blend. Reservations are available and worth making on weekends. Open Monday to Friday 7am–3pm, Saturday 7am–3pm, Sunday and public holidays 8am–3pm.

Mitko and Sadie Black sit within about 100 metres of each other on Perth Avenue, so combining them in one trip is easy. Street parking on Perth Avenue is generally fine during the week. Albion Station is a short walk from all three cafes.
