The PPCC, Virtual ED, Nurse-on-Call, and after-hours options — what each one does and when to use it
Your GP is fully booked. It's 7pm on a Sunday. Your kid has an earache that's getting worse. You don't want to spend four hours in the Sunshine Hospital emergency department waiting behind actual emergencies.
There are better options. Most people in Brimbank don't know they exist. This guide covers all of them, with the details you need to actually use them.
This is the one worth saving in your phone. Sunshine Urgent Care Clinic at 421 Ballarat Road is a free GP-led urgent care service open every day from 8am to 10pm, including public holidays. It sits next to Sunshine Hospital, which means it has access to on-site radiology, pathology, and pharmacy.
It costs nothing. No Medicare card required. You can walk in or book ahead by phone or online — appointments are preferred but not essential.
The clinic treats conditions that are urgent but not life-threatening. Suspected fractures, sprains, earaches, gut issues, migraines, allergies, skin infections, insect bites, coughs and colds. If you are not sure whether your condition qualifies, call ahead or just show up and the team will triage you on arrival. If your condition turns out to be more serious than expected, the clinic is in direct contact with the hospital and Ambulance Victoria.
What it does not do: routine scripts, repeat prescriptions, chronic condition management. Those need your regular GP.
The VVED is a free video service that connects you with emergency doctors and nurse practitioners, 24 hours a day, from your phone or laptop. You register online at vved.org.au, and a clinician will join a video call with you. No Medicare card needed, no referral, no appointment.
It is genuinely useful at 2am when you are not sure whether something needs a hospital visit. The service sees over 600 Victorians a day and helps around 83 per cent of patients avoid a trip to a physical emergency department.
A few things to know before you use it. You need a device with a camera — phone, tablet, or laptop. You cannot phone the VVED; it is video only. And it is not for life-threatening emergencies. Chest pain, difficulty breathing, serious bleeding — call 000.
Interpreter services are available. Registration forms are available in multiple languages on the website.
Nurse-on-Call is a Victorian Government phone service staffed by registered nurses around the clock. Call 1300 60 60 24 any time and a nurse will answer — not a machine, not a recorded menu. They aim to answer 80 per cent of calls within 20 seconds.
The nurses can talk through your symptoms, advise whether you need to see a doctor, suggest how to manage something at home, or — if your condition is serious — transfer your call directly to 000. They do not diagnose, but they can tell you whether something needs attention tonight or can wait until morning.
If English is not your first language, call TIS National on 131 450 first and ask to be transferred to Nurse-on-Call. The service is available in 21 languages.
The National Home Doctor Service covers the Sunshine and Brimbank area. Call 13 SICK (13 7425) and a GP will come to your home. This service runs after normal clinic hours and on weekends.
Unlike the options above, this is not free. A fee applies and Medicare rebates may partially offset the cost depending on your card status. It is best suited to situations where you genuinely cannot travel but need a doctor in person — not just advice.
Chest pain, difficulty breathing, stroke symptoms, serious bleeding, loss of consciousness, severe allergic reaction, suspected overdose. Call 000. Do not drive yourself and do not wait to see if it improves.
Sunshine Hospital emergency department is at 176 Furlong Road, St Albans. Phone: (03) 8345 1333.
A quick way to think about it. If the condition can wait until tomorrow, book your GP. If it is urgent today but not life-threatening, the Sunshine Urgent Care Clinic on Ballarat Road is the best option — free, walk-in, open until 10pm. If you cannot leave home or it is the middle of the night, the VVED video service or Nurse-on-Call can both help. If you need a doctor at your door after hours, call 13 SICK. If it is an emergency, call 000.
Free GP-led urgent care. Open 8am-10pm every day including public holidays. Walk-ins welcome. No Medicare card required. On-site radiology and pathology.
